Pricing, Licensing & Purchasing
Q. Which License should I choose?
Standard License:
A standard license allows a single user to activate AirServer on up to five of their own computers. This is the best value for a single-user.
Student License:
A valid educational email address is required to purchase a student license. The student license allows a single user to activate AirServer on up to three of their own computers.
Commercial License:
The commercial license is the correct option for a school, business or enterprise. Each commercial license is valid for one computer activation. One activated computer can support multiple users, as long as AirServer is installed and manually activated from an administrative account. For simplicity, all licenses purchased from the same account will be able to share a single activation code.
Q. Do you offer free promotional licenses to Apple employees, Apple Distinguished Educators or reviewers?
Yes, we offer a single user license to Apple employees. We would require Apple employees to send an email from their apple.com email address. We would then create the license and send the activation information to your email address.
Apple Distinguished Educators also qualify for a free single user license. Contact us with your information and we will set up a license for you.
Reviewers may also contact us to request a free promotional license. Be sure to include a link to the location where the review would be posted and any credentials you may have to offer. We will review the information and issue promotional licenses upon approval.
Q. Can I activate my PC and Mac with the same license?
No. All the licenses are platform-specific. Mac and PC licenses are sold separately and will not be able to activate AirServer on the opposite computer platform.
Q. I purchased the wrong type of license. Can I exchange it?
Yes, contact us and we can switch the license for you. We are only able to switch the whole license to the other platform, meaning we cannot switch an activation within a license to the opposite computer platform.
Q. Can I try AirServer for free?
Yes, visit the download page and register for a free trial by clicking the button under the platform of your choice. Once you register, you will receive an email with activation information for your free 7-day trial.
Q. My free trial of AirServer has stopped working
The free trial of AirServer lasts for one week. To extend it either get a friend to download a copy of AirServer through your unique download url (you’ll get 3 extra days for each friend that downloads) or simply purchase a single user license.
Q. Are updates free?
Yes. We are constantly adding feature improvements and tweaks to AirServer, which you will benefit from at no extra cost. When a new update becomes available, you will be prompted to update from within the app. Simply update to get the new version.
Q. Do licenses expire?
No. Licenses do not expire and there are no subscription fees. Once you purchase a license, you will not have to pay for it again.
Q. Can I pay with my credit or debit card without signing up for a PayPal account?
Yes. PayPal's payment engine gives you this option when available. Simply click the link that says "Pay with my credit or debit card" on the checkout page and enter your details. Unfortunately, PayPal do enforce certain region restrictions and this option may not be available for people in certain countries. We do not currently have another way to accept credit card payments.
Q. Do you accept other methods of payment?
Yes. We do accept payments by bank transfer or check. See information on sending a purchase order below.
Q. Can I send a purchase order from my school or business?
Yes, we do accept Purchase Orders. Purchase Orders should be sent to us by email. Each commercial license (for use in a school, business or enterprise) has a price of $3.99 USD and offers one activation. Each computer requires one activation and multiple users on the same machine can use the same activation if AirServer is activated using elevated priviledges.
On a Mac, run this command to activate AirServer for all users:

Download DirectX 9c
After downloading this package, extract the files into a folder on your PC and then run DXSetup.exe to complete the installation process. - To improve video streaming over AirPlay compatibility, install iTunes, QuickTime, Haali Media Splitter and FFDShow tryout.
- If using an additional 3rd party firewall on your PC, make sure that AirServer.exe is allowed to receive network connections.
- Your iOS device and the PC must be on the same network.
Q. How do I set up a password and why might I need one?
When AirServer is running on your computer, it will be listed on any other iOS device connected to the same network. Anyone who sees your computer would be able to send a signal to AirServer unless you enable your password settings. AirServer for Windows allows you to enter a fixed password. Open AirServer preferences and select "Fixed Password." Enter a password of your choosing and hit the rebroadcast button. Anyone who tries to connect to AirServer would be prompted to enter the password. Without the correct password, they will not be able to stream or mirror to AirServer.
AirServer for Mac offers other password and passcode options that will soon be available on the Windows version. The options available are:
- No Password
No password will be required to connect to AirServer.
- Fixed Password
Manually type a password of your choice. Any iOS device wishing to connect to AirServer will be prompted for the password. Only those who have the correct password will be able to stream and mirror to AirServer.
- Onscreen Password
This option will work with all iOS Devices. A password will be displayed on the screen. Anyone wishing to connect to AirServer would be prompted to enter this password. Once a user enters the password in their iOS device, they would be able to stream or mirror to AirServer until the next time the app is quit.
- Onscreen Passcode
This option will only work with iOS 6.0 and higher. A randomly-generated passcode will be displayed on the screen. Anyone wishing to connect to AirServer would be prompted to enter this passcode. Once a user enters the passcode in their iOS device, they would be able to stream or mirror to AirServer until the next time the app is quit.
- Ask Me
This will prompt you for permission when someone tries to connect to your computer. You can either accept or decline the incoming device.
Q. How do I uninstall AirServer from my Mac?

Activation & Deactivation
Q. How do I activate AirServer?
After you purchase a license or register for a free trial, you will receive an email with the activation information. After installing AirServer, you will be prompted to enter your activation code. You can use either the activation code or the email address used at the time of purchase.
Q. My trial version will not activate.
Be sure to register for the trial version first. Visit our Download page and click the button under the trial version for your computer platform. This will open a registration window. Fill in the information and hit the "Request Activation" button. You will receive an email with the activation information. If you have not received this email, check your spam folder. You must confirm your email address before activating AirServer. If you did not receive an email, use the contact form to send us a message.
Q. My email address does not work for activation
If you purchased AirServer, the email address will be the primary email address associated with your PayPal account. If you have downloaded via Facebook, the email address will be the one associated with your Facebook account. If you've tried these emails and none work, please use the contact form to send us a message and we will help you with the activation.
Q. I am receiving an "Oops" message when trying to activate.
The "Oops" message appears when AirServer cannot contact our activation server. If this occurs, you likely have high security or firewall settings that are preventing your computer from communicating with our server. Check your security settings and configure them to allow communication with activation.airserverapp.com.
Q. Why can't I activate my Mac with my PC license, or activate my PC with my Mac license?
All licenses are platform-specific and will not be able to activate AirServer on the opposite type of computer. If you have purchased the wrong type of license, use the contact form to send us a message and we would be happy to switch your license to the opposite platform.
Q. My email address has changed.
If you would like to update the email address on your license, please use the contact form and send us the current email address and the new email address. We will update the information on your account.
Q. How can I deactivate my computer?
Every new purchase will receive an activation management link in the confirmation email. Visit this page to view all the computers currently activated with your license. To deactivate a computer, click the deactivate link next to the name of the computer. This will release the activation and allow you to use the activation again. If you do not have the link to your activation management page, use the contact form and send us a message with your activation code. We can generate the link and send it to you.
Q. AirServer is telling me that I have too many activations.
If you receive this message, you have reached your activation limit. This may happen if you have recently updated or replaced a computer. Uninstalling AirServer does not automatically deactivate the app on your computer. To do this, find your purchase email and click the activation management link. Here, you will be able to view all the computers currently activated with your license. Click the deactivate link next to any computers that are no longer being used to reclaim the activation. If you do not have the link to your activation management page, use the contact form and send us a message with your activation code. We can generate the link and send it to you.
Q. Why am I being asked to activate every time a new user logs on to the computer?
For the activation to stick for multiple users on the same computer, you will have to install or run AirServer from the computer's administrative account and manually activate AirServer via a command line with elevated privileges.
On a Mac, run this command to activate AirServer for all users:
sudo /Applications/AirServer.app/Contents/MacOS/AirServer --activate ActivationCode
On a PC, open command prompt in elevated mode (run-as-admin) and run this command to activate AirServer for all users:
"%ProgramFiles(x86)%\AirServer\AirServer\AirServerConsole" activate ActivationCode
Be sure to replace to replace the end of the command line that says ActivatonCode with your own activation code. If you are running a 32-bit Windows system, remove (x86) from the command line.

Q. Which ports are used by AirServer?
Other than UDP port 5353 (Apple Bonjour) and TCP 7100 (Mirroring), AirServer uses dynamic ports. If you need the port information for configuring your firewall, we recommended creating an exe-based rule instead, which will allow AirServer.exe to receive incoming traffic.
Connection Issues
Q. How do I connect to my computer from my iOS device?
You can connect to AirServer from your iOS device in two ways:
- Open your iOS device and double-tap the home button. A sliding menu will appear at the bottom of your screen. Scroll left until you see the circular AirPlay button. Tap the icon and a list of AirPlay enabled devices will appear. The computer you installed AirServer on will show up on this list. To connect, simply tap the name of your machine.
- If you’re running an AirPlay enabled application, such as YouTube, the AirPlay icon will visible. Simply tap the icon and a list of AirPlay enabled devices will appear. The computer you installed AirServer on will show up on this list. To connect, simply tap the name of your machine.
Note: If your device supports Mirroring you’ll have the option to turn on/off Mirroring when you select your Mac/PC.
Q. Do I have to install anything on my iOS device?
No, AirServer is only installed on the computer, not on the iOS device. Once AirServer is running on the computer, your iOS device should automatically recognize your computer as an AirPlay receiver.
Q. I do not see the AirPlay button on my iOS device.
The AirPlay button only appears when an AirPlay receiver is found on the same network. If you do not see an AirPlay icon anywhere on your device, it cannot discover your computer.
Please make sure that your iOS device and computer are on the same network and that your firewall is configured to allow AirServer.exe to receive incoming networking traffic. Also ensure the same is done on any secondary firewalls your computer may have. Ensure you are running the latest version of AirServer and have the latest iOS software.
If you are behind a multi subnet or Layer 3 network, please ensure that multi-casting is enabled and Bonjour is discoverable across the network. In most cases Bonjour will not be accessible across the network as it's blocked by default. However, here is a guide you can look over, or send to your networking Administrator to look over, regarding Bonjour across Layer 3 Networks and Multiple Subnets: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps4570/products_tech_note09186a0080bb1d7c.shtml
You should also power off and restart your iOS device, computer and router.
Q. I’m unable to connect after I’ve changed my computer’s username or password.
To fix this, you need to either click Rebroadcast or quit and relaunch AirServer.
Q. I can find my computer on my iOS device, but nothing happens when I click it.
This is most likely a firewall issue. Please make sure that your firewall is configured to allow AirServer to receive incoming networking traffic. You should create a firewall exception for AirServer within your firewall settings. Also, ensure the same is done on any secondary firewalls your computer may have.
Q. Does AirServer work with VLANs or multi-subnet environments?
Yes, AirServer will work in this configuration as long as the iOS device and computer are connected to the same network. Bonjour must also be accessible across the network.
Also, ask your administrator to ensure that multi-casting is enabled on the network and make sure your firewall is configured to allow AirServer to receive incoming networking traffic.
Q. AirServer works at home, but I cannot connect at school or work.
Most schools, businesses and public locations use mutli-subnet or Layer 3 networking. In this type of environment, Bonjour discovery issues are common. You should ensure that multi-casting is enabled and Bonjour is accessible across the network.
Also, you may have to configure your firewall to allow AirServer to receive incoming networking traffic.
Q. Can I connect with an ad-hoc network?
Yes, you are able to create an ad-hoc network on your computer and connect your iOS device directly to the ad-hoc signal. This will allow you to use AirServer if a network is giving you trouble and you do not have the ability to adjust network settings.
Create a computer-to-computer ad-hoc network on a Mac:
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3771
Create an ad-hoc network on a Windows 7 based PC using Security type as WEP:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/set-up-a-computer-to-computer-ad-hoc-network
Create an ad-hoc network on a Windows Vista based PC using Security type as WEP:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/set-up-a-computer-to-computer-ad-hoc-network
Q. I can connect, but there is a lot of lag.
There can be many causes for lag or a choppy connection, but here are a few things you can try:
- Find the mirroring tab in AirServer Preferences and try selecting the "Use Software decoder only" option if you are on a Mac. Then disconnect and mirror again. This can impact performance on many machines.
- Try changing the optimization (under the mirroring tab) to 720p and mirror again. If AirServer is projecting on a display which is 1080p or larger, and mirroring optimization is set for "Any Device - Recommended," then AirServer will automatically negotiate the best possible mirroring resolution for 1080p, which can cause slowness.
- For even better performance, but lower quality, set "Optimize for" to 720p and select the "slow network" option. Then mirror again.
- Use iStumbler (Mac) or NetStumbler (PC) to see which WiFi channels are in use around you, then configure your router to use a channel which is free. You should preferably also configure your router to only use WiFi-n.
- If using an ad-hoc network (computer to computer), pick a channel which is greater than 11.
Q. I've tried everything, but still can't find my computer.
Restart the Wi-Fi router and the iOS device. If your iOS device still has trouble locating the Mac/PC/iOS device running AirServer, restart your Mac/PC/Receiving Device. If it still doesn't work, check your Wi-Fi router's settings.
If your Wi-Fi router supports interface isolation or Wi-Fi isolation, make sure that these settings are turned off. These settings prevent wireless devices from communicating with each other. Refer to the documentation that came with your Wi-Fi router to access its settings.
If you still have no luck, please contact us and we'll help you troubleshoot. If you do contact us, make sure to include the make and model of your computer, Wi-Fi router and iOS device(s) in the message. The more information we have, the quicker we can help you fix the problem.
Mirroring
Q. How do I Mirror?
- Open your iOS device and double-tap the home button. A sliding menu will appear at the bottom of your screen.
- Scroll left until you see the circular AirPlay button.
- Tap the icon and a list of AirPlay enabled devices will appear. The computer on which you installed AirServer will show up on this list.
- To connect, simply tap the name of your machine then switch the MIRRORING option to ON.
Note: Mirroring is only possible on iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod Touch 5, iPad mini, iPad 2, iPad 3 or iPad 4.
Q. I do not see any mirroring options, even though I have a mirroring compatible device. How can I fix this?
Power Off your iOS device, wait for 5 seconds and turn it back on. This is a common iOS issue and it is good to restart your iOS device every couple of months.
Q. Does my iOS device support mirroring?
Mirroring is only possible on iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod Touch 5, iPad mini, iPad 2, iPad 3 and iPad 4. Older devices that are not on this list do not have the proper hardware capability for mirroring.
Q. A green window appears when I try to mirror to my Mac.
Open AirServer Preferences and click the Mirroring tab. Then enable the "Use Software Decoder Only" option and try mirrorring again. This should solve your issue green window mirroring issues.
Q. My Mac is freezing when I mirror.
There may be due to a hardware decoder conflict. To fix this, open AirServer preferences and click the Mirroring tab. Here, enable the "Use Software Decoder Only" option. Mirror again and everything should start working smoothly.
Q. Can I mirror my Android device?
No, you cannot currently mirror with an Android device.
Q. My mirroring connection is unstable or has a lot of lag.

Also, you may have to configure your firewall to allow AirServer to receive incoming networking traffic.
Q. My mirroring connecting is dropping after a few minutes.
Make sure you disable the Auto Lock feature on your iOS device. Go into the settings app, tap the General tab, and find Auto-Lock. Set this to Never. If Auto-Lock is enabled, your iOS device can go to sleep and cut the connection after some time.
Another cause of this might be that your connection cannot handle the bandwidth. Try connecting an ethernet cable and check if the performance is better.
If you are using non-Apple bluetooth devices, they could be interfering with the Wireless connection and causing lags. Try turning off all bluetooth devices that aren't from Apple.
Q. Can I use AirServer to control my mirrored iOS device from my computer?
No. AirServer will only allow you to use media controls from your computer with streamed media files from AirPlay-enabled apps such as Music, Videos and Photos. You cannot control your iOS device from the computer when mirroring.
Video
Q. I am unable to AirPlay certain videos to AirServer on my PC.
Your PC may not have the codecs to play certain videos. We recommend installing iTunes and QuickTime on your computer. Also, try downloading the Haali Media Splitter and FFDShow tryout codecs.
Q. I cannot play live-streaming apps, such as HBO Go, on AirServer.
Live streaming apps, such as Amazon instant video, HBO Go, BBC iPlayer, and most sports apps will not be able to stream to AirServer from within the app. This is because of the live http streaming that the apps use. Only Apple TV can decode this information for now, as they are encrypted. We are looking into ways of implementing support for this in AirServer for a future update, but you should be able to mirror some of these apps to AirServer for now.
Q. Can I AirPlay rented movies from iTunes?
Unfortunately, it’s not possible to stream rented material to AirServer. This is due to Apple's protection on rented material.
Q. I am not able to play all YouTube videos.
Some YouTube videos and YouTube playlists utilize a different type of file encryption which AirServer cannot yet decode. We are working on adding more video support, but you should be able to view these videos in Mirroring mode.
Q. I am not able to AirPlay videos from within the Safari App.
This is a known issue, and we are looking into adding this support in a future update.
Q. My recorded videos are rotated incorrectly.
Some recorded videos may appear upside down, or rotated, if the iOS device was not held in the following orientation while recording:
- Home button on the bottom for portrait.
- Home button to the right for landscape.
The EXIF data files associated with it will tell other computers which direction to show your movie, meaning that if it is recorded with the camera on the opposite side, it will be upside down.
iOS devices can automatically correct the orientation, and we are hoping to add this functionality within AirServer in a future update. In the meantime, we recommend that recorded videos be shot with the iOS device held in the above orientation.
Audio
Q. I can't stream audio
Please make sure you are running the latest version of AirServer and that your iOS device has the latest iOS software.
Try powering off and restarting your iOS device, computer and router.
You may also have discovery issues. Follow the troubleshooting tips in the "Connection Issues" section for help with configuring your firewall settings.
Q. I sometimes hear audio jitters when using AirServer for PC or have trouble syncing the audio.
We are aware of some audio issues that may cause some jitters or sync issues when mirroring certain apps. Our team is currently working on a new audio system for AirServer for PC, which should fix all audio related issues. The PC update with this new audio system is expected soon. The Mac version will follow shortly after.
Q. How do I use AirServer's audio buffer settings?
You can use the audio buffer settings to fine tune the lag and manage dropouts. Adjusting the audio slider to a value of 5000 should ensure AirPort Express synching. Each time you make an audio buffer change, you will need to stop AirPlay streaming, hit the rebroadcast button and reconnect the device before the changes take effect.
Error Messages
Q. Windows - D3DXCompileShader failed

HRESULT 0x8007007E (file not found) implies that some files are missing from the DirectX HLSL compiler installation.
To resolve this error, install the full version of DirectX 9c, even if you have a newer version of DirectX already installed on your PC. DirectX 9.0c has certain protocols that are necessary for AirServer and are not available in their latest release of DirectX 11. They can coexist on your computer without conflict.

Q. Audio jitters and sync issues
We are aware of some audio issues that may cause some jitters or sync issues when mirroring certain apps. Our team is currently working on a new audio system for AirServer for PC, which should fix all audio related issues. The PC update with this new audio system is expected soon. The Mac version will follow shortly after.
Q. HBO Go and other live-streaming apps do not play in AirServer
Live streaming apps, such as HBO Go, Amazon instant video, BBC iPlayer, and most sports apps will not be able to stream to AirServer from within the app. This is because of the live http streaming that the apps use. Only Apple TV can decode this information for now, as they are encrypted. We are looking into ways of implementing support for this in AirServer for a future update, but you should be able to mirror some of these apps to AirServer for now.
Tips & Tricks
Tip: Use the aspect ratio button in fullscreen mode to fill your screen
Some signals are sized differently than the display on which they are shown. Just as televisions give you the option of using different aspect ratios to resize the image to your screen, AirServer also gives you this option by clicking the aspect ratio button in mirroring mode. Continue to click the aspect ratio button until you are satisfied with the image on your screen.
Tip: Turn on the camera app and start mirroring for some live streaming fun!
While mirroring, your iOS device can send a live video feed to AirServer when you open the camera app! This can be helpful in situations where you are trying to do an online conference or live-stream session and need to show something to your audience. You can also use this to have some fun and walk around an event with AirServer projected to a larger screen. Use your imagination and try different uses!
Tip: Wake on demand
On a network that uses all Apple products, such as an AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule, iMac or MacBook, you can wake the computer from sleeping mode by streaming to AirServer!
Tip: How do I enable 1080p mirroring?
In order to mirror in 1080p, you must have iOS 6 or newer on your iOS device. You would also need a display that supports 1080p or higher. If you meet these two prerequisites, proceed by opening AirServer preferences and clicking the Mirroring tab. Set the device optimization to "Any Device." Once all of these pre-requisites are met, AirServer will automatically negotiate a 1080p signal and boost your image quality!
Tip: Share mirroring feeds with other Mac video apps using Syphon
Mac video apps that use Syphon will be able to use an AirServer mirror stream as a video source! This can be a huge asset to VJs and live-video editors. This is a Mac-only feature and will only work when Mirroring.
Tip: What do the Rebroadcast button and the "Rebroadcast Automatically" option do?
The Rebroadcast button updates the AirPlay broadcast. Use this button after making any changes in AirServer Preferences to update the signal with your changes. The "Rebroadcast Automatically" option will force the airplay broadcast to update every few minutes, which is recommended for users with non-Apple routers.
Tip: Add extra lossless quality Audio only receiver
Wouldn't it be great if AirServer could work like an Apple TV and an AirPort express, both at the same time?
With this option you can enable both these features into AirServer.
Once this option is enabled, you will see two AirPlay endpoints available for your Mac. One regular AirPlay receiver and one audio-only receiver suffixed with an "Ex" in the end.
Use this feature if you want to keep watching a video on your iOS device and want to send only the audio-only part of the video to your Mac running AirServer.
Streaming to the audio-only part of AirServer also forces the iOS device to send audio in lossless quality as opposed to AAC compressed audio.
Tip: Re-align windows when in side-by-side mirroring mode
When multiple iOS devices are connected, AirServer will automatically resize each window to fit your screen. You can, however, use your mouse to drag and resize each window.
